Milquetoast Colorado U.S. Senator got a zero. For most of us, this should come as no surprise. So what did he get a zero in?
The zero came in the latest Iowa Presidential poll. Michael Bennet may be joining his buddy John Hickenlooper as also-rans in this Presidential Primary very soon. Bennet failed to meet the donor and polling threshold for the third Democratic debate. The Democratic National Committee just increased the requirements for debate #5. Bennet may still make Debate #4.
But the big question at this point is why? Bennet recently made a decent-sized media buy in Iowa. That was on September 17, so he should be fresh in Iowan’s minds as a contender. But alas, no. They just don’t like him or just find him too boring. Those of us here in Colorado who follow him, get it.
Here are some problems we see for Michael Bennet from here on out. First, while running for President, he’s actually had to stand for something and try to articulate his views. This is problematic for someone who on the stump, has basically not stood for anything. Plus he benefited from weak competition in 2016. Again, Republicans failed to field a viable candidate, and still only came up a few percentage points short.
Second, by having to stand for something, Bennet has been exposed as the liberal that he truly is. Bennet tried to brand himself as a moderate that’s “trying to fix Washington.” When, in fact, he is part of the Washington problem.
Third, based on what
Now, we freely admit that there usually is a big benefit to running for President. Data and donors are an example. Bennet has definitely improved his House File. House File is technical jargon for donor and voter lists augmented with extra data.
This means, in theory, Bennet could amass a larger war chest in 2022, and he will be better known by national donors. However, he has been a targeted race by National Democrats in 2010 and 2016, so the extent to which this has improved remains to be seen.
Stay tuned, we’ve started the Drop-out Clock for Mr. Zero here at Colorado Citizens Press. Our guess is he will drop out no later than the 3rd week in October.
We value your feedback! Please write in the comments below or on social media who you think would make a great challenger to Bennet in 2022. We know it’s a long way off, but maybe some of your suggestions will start preparing now – it’s going to be expensive!
