Polis: We Overspent, Now Let Us Spend Your Tax Refund

Denver, CO – Governor Jared Polis begged voters to give up their tax refunds (hike taxes) on Wednesday, October 2, because Democrats overspent in 2019.

For those of you just now hearing about the effort to steal your tax refund guaranteed by the Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR), the propaganda blitz from the left is heating up.

Check out this quote from Polis, where he essentially lies to the public about why Democrats failed to fund top voter priorities in 2019.

“With support from voters, Prop CC will finally allow the state to begin fixing things,” Polis said to applause. “If you’re frustrated about traffic and your commute and potholes, vote yes on CC.

“If you’re tired of kids getting shortchanged in schools, vote yes on CC. If you’re tired of the cost of community college and college getting farther and farther out of reach, vote yes on CC.”

Governor Jared Polis on Proposition CC

With full control of Colorado’s government, Democrats had their chance in 2019 to “begin fixing things.” Instead, they created expensive new programs that they cannot afford to fund. Polis created three new offices by executive order, and his office even attempted to censor the press when he received negative coverage on the costs. (For the record, that negative coverage was the truth about the costs of Polis’ executive orders).

Democrats are desperate to pass the Proposition CC tax hike because they cannot sustain their excessive spending. In typical underhanded fashion, they are lying to achieve their goal.

So what is the lie?

There is no guarantee Prop CC will increase education or road funding. Yes, some of the Prop CC funds will be earmarked for education and transportation (not just the potholes Polis claims it will fix). But this means an equal amount of your tax dollars can be pulled out of these funds and moved into a slush fund for politician’s pet projects.

The government does not need Prop CC to fix our roads and fund education. They need to take responsibility for their core duties.

  1. My refund is the fact that my wage withholding for state income taxes was over withheld. So those that underpaid taxes, would not be affected — because my wage withholding was more that my state taxes when I filed taxes Gov. Polis will “snag” that. If CC passes, I will decrease my state withhold to be sure that I owe taxes on April 15th.

    1. That’s not at all what this is talking about. Your withholding and overpayment of taxes will still be refunded to you. You can still withhold as much as you want and will receive that refund.

This is to have the government keep any surplus of money that does not get spent from the budget instead of refunding it back to us. It is the same as any business. If you make more revenue than expenses in a business, you don’t turn around and give the money back to the customers. That is what this is talking about. This is try and get rid of the TABOR act which has hindered the CO economy ever since its inception. We are the only state economy that runs like this, and has hindered any progress in public works and education for the better part of two decades.

    1. How did this 3 dollar bill get elected?
Can you imagine if you as a private citizen pulled this crap if you owed the state?
I love Texas, after living in Colorado for nearly 20 years. What have you done to one of my favorite states?
      GOD BLESS TEXAS!!!
      Yup, REAGAN!

  2. Prop CC is just the first effort to do an end run around TABOR. The best argument against it is to try to remember when dimocrats ever stopped at raising one tax. Try to remember when any problem that was promised to be fixed by the next tax raise ever got fixed. It hasn’t happened, doesn’t happen, won’t happen.

    1. It’s not nearly the first effort, politicians have been trying this kind of thing since TABOR was enacted. It’s just the first effort by this commie administration. My philosophy is NEVER vote to give them more, and thank God for TABOR because politicians, especially Democrats, have never met a tax they didn’t love and they have ZERO restraint when it comes to spending OPM.

    1. Have you seen how the repugs have increased the national debt in the last couple of years? And you say Dems overspend.

      1. 1. Pretty sure this is about Colorado state politicians, not politicians on the Federal government – let’s not conflate the 2;
        2. What was the National Debt on January 21st, 2009, compared to January 21st, 2017?

  3. My vote; Defund the entire government, or at least most of it. We literally pay roughly half of every dollar earned to some form of taxation. Enough is enough and that was enough a very long time ago.

If you give them the tabor refunds they’ll just spend that and end up in the red next year.

Ever since counties started flipping blue all we get is ballot questions about new taxes. NO!

Are taxes this bad in Wyoming or where can we escape this liberal freight train?

We made a point of minimizing our effective tax payments many years ago. We’re also buying some items wholesale online and just finding ways to pay less for everything. Taxes are so high, and so is the price of everything from food to labor services. We’re getting priced out of Colorado and fear we will have no choice but to move soon.

The counties are taxing home owners twice and three times what they were charging only 5 years ago and that’s not enough? Greed.

  4. CC takes away your vote on tax hikes as well ( like the California gas tax) and gives Democratic Party to pass new taxes without our vote!!! Polis is an oil man! Vote NO!!!on CC

  5. I say No, I can’t over spend, you really should’nt, o ya I can just take money from tax payers, they really don’t need it anyway!!

  6. Isn’t there an audit of where the mo eye is spent. I assume the Dems understand an audit verifies exactly where all the money is spent. The GOP should be all over the audit to verify where all monies go. I trust the independent auditor will show the public where taxes go. This would be similar to how a bond or levy works. Monies can’t be spent on items not laid out by the documents as shown to the voters. I assume everyone understands this. Red and Blue.

  7. This is a great article on the falacy of Prop CC. The Dems have done this INTENTIONALLY figuring they could pull all the wool over our eyes. If CC is approved it will just encourage their wasteful spending and they will continue to do it without the restraint of TABOR. VOTE NO ON CC.

  8. There is now no way that I could live in my native state again; despite how ever much I want to. First, it is due to insane taxation and invasive private property controls. Second, I can not tolerate the political foolishness that the imported California & NY residents have imprinted into the governing DNA. Legislation in Denver, Pueblo, and Colorado Springs is not based in sanity but in Utopian Dreaming and imagination. And Colorado State University is a major, contributing liberal-progressive-communist factory. Third, there is no salvage possible of the state for “old time” natives short of expelling anyone not able to verify native status anchored in dates 1969 or before. Those with later dates of showing up in Colorado roles are suspect as being California and NY imports / and therefore “invasive species”.
My one burning question has always been, “HOW could this transformation happen to Colorado and it’s very conservative grass roots?” We do, in fact, know the real answer to that, but still I am overwhelmed with astonishment and sorrow. I am forever now in exile.

    1. The answer to your burning question is “The same way it happened to our conservative, God-fearing COUNTRY! Senator McCarthy was correct about the commies.”

  9. The voters won’t let it fly and he’ll overturn the vote in the same way he overturned Colorado’s vote for oil, the same way he overturned Colorado’s vote for the 2nd Amendment.

  10. How could schools get short changed if the get the taxes off cannabis ? How is that possible is someone stealing cause that’s what it sounds like

    1. It seems much of that money has been redirected to guess what!!!! DRUG AND ALCOHOL REHAB!!! Makes sense, huh? Make the sale of gateway drugs legal, tax them, then spend that money on attempts to mitigate the damage you have caused.

    1. Yes, a refund merely means, payroll deductions and anticipated “taxed owed” deposits to Colorado Department of Revenue exceeded your Colorado Tax Return of “owed”.

  11. This ass hat is stupid enough that he thinks the tax payers will let him have their money at will. And he admits to overspending? Oh no. He needs to be out of their now.

  12. So imagine going to the grocery store and buying a sixteen dollar roast. But when you pay for it you give the cashier a twenty dollar bill. But stead of getting three dollar bills and change back, the cashier just closes her drawer and smiles. And when asked, she tells you, well, we need more money for parking lot maintenance, so we’ll just redirect your change. So you protest, saying you took the bus here, cause you don’t have a car. And the cashier says, don’t worry about it, everyone who doesn’t have exact change will be making the investment. Everyone is paying their fair share.
This is community theft. I guess the Colorado governor needs more money to keep Nathan Dunlop alive. Voting him governor was a bust.

  13. Something else to ponder at…So we pay income taxes each time we get paid, rather it be weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.

Then, when we file taxes at the beginning of that following year with some of us end up getting a State tax refund on what we OVERPAID.

But when we file taxes for the next following year, we are taxed again on the refund that was returned back to us that we OVERPAID from the previous year.

Isn’t that double taxing??? We already were taxed on our income and paid in too much, so they gave us back the money we OVERPAID in taxes. Then, we have to file that overpayment (refund) as income when we already claimed it and OVERPAID them???

How does the government keep getting by with this??? 😡😡😡
