Gunnison, CO – Part-time homeowners in Gunnison County were ordered to leave or not come back by the unelected public health director.
Non-residents are ordered not to enter the county unless it is for an exempted reason.
This is according to a new order issued on April 11, 2020, by Gunnison County Public Health Director, Joni Reynolds.
There are only a few exceptions to the order. “Essential” employees are permitted to return, and part-time homeowners who receive personal approval from Reynolds may occupy their homes.
Homeowners who arrived in Gunnison County less than 14 days before the order are ordered to leave. Homeowners who wish to return to their part-time homes are ordered not to return.
“Necessary” travel is permitted through the county, but otherwise, visitors are ordered to turn around at the county line.
Repeat violators could face up to 18 months in jail and up to $5,000 fines.
Gunnison County residents contacted by FOX31 were generally in favor of the strict orders.
A relatively small number of people will be affected by this order, but in principle, it is wrong for multiple reasons.
Problems
First and foremost, the order is handed down and overseen by ONE UNELECTED bureaucrat who assumed power over everyone who steps foot in Gunnison County. This is outrageous, and not how our political system is intended to operate.
Secondly, this single person (Joni Reynolds), has the authority to tell a homeowner whether or not they have a right to stay at their property. Worse still, they must ask her for permission! Giving unelected government officials power over an individual’s use of their property is insane, no matter the crisis at hand.
“I’m just reviewing those on an individual basis and then making a decision for each case, one by one,” Reynolds said.

Essentially, if you need to travel to Gunnison to perform necessary maintenance on your property, it appears you are no longer allowed. If you travel to your property in Gunnison County and NEVER stop anywhere besides the land you own, you are violating a public health order punishable by jail time and fines.
Freedoms and liberties are being taken away by unelected bureaucrats across the State of Colorado. Worse still, it seems there is no end to the powers these people will assume over citizens.
