We reported back in June about how the contractor doing the work on the Main Terminal at DIA was already waaaaaay behind schedule and running into cost overruns.
We opined that this is the typical junk we see with many government contractors and the government’s lack of accountability for contractors.
Well, the situation is now worse. A fire caused unnecessary damage to the main terminal. The article also goes after the contractor for its lack of minority hires, but we could easily write a whole article on that issue (how the system is gamed, and how you should be able to hire the most qualified contractor that can get the job done), but we digress.
Then there is the issue of change orders. Change orders by the client can add costs. Government is notoriously bad at sticking with the plan, and change orders always add to the cost. DIA was probably notoriuosly bad with change orders. We’re sure the truth will come to light!
Needless to say, this DIA project is a disaster. DIA from its inception has been kind-of a disaster with the baggage system, concrete problems, runway issues, and what we think was the politics that went into not expanding Stapleton Airport. Environmental concerns were sighted back then, but now we see a bunch of development in that area!
