Denver, CO – New unemployment numbers show Colorado saw the largest unemployment rate increase of any state in March.
The unemployment rate in Colorado jumped from 2.5% to 4.5%. That is an 80% increase.
This is more proof that Governor Jared Polis’ draconian “Stay at Home” and shutdown orders are an overreaction.
Still, Western and Mountain states saw early unemployment spikes even as some states didn’t institute stay-at-home orders until late March. In Colorado, for example, Democratic Gov. Jared Polis ordered nonessential businesses to adjust the percentage of their on-site staff on March 22, but he didn’t issue a full stay-at-home order until March 25. Yet Colorado’s unemployment rate rose 2 percentage points last month.

Since March, more than 150,000 Coloradans filed for unemployment. With unemployment claims accelerating in April, Colorado’s unemployment rate is exponentially worse than the March snapshot.
Worse still, these numbers do not capture the full scope of the unemployment crisis.
Many who are unemployed will not file for unemployment right away. Others have just been unable to file in Colorado due to an overloaded system or rules precluding them from filing.
Colorado is at a crossroads with the economy. It needs to be jump-started immediately to prevent further damage.
The number of people who do not have a job to go back to at the end of this week is climbing. If these draconian orders are not lifted, more jobs will be permanently lost in Colorado.
However, Polis is adamant that Colorado stays on lockdown through April 26, 2020.
That is another week of lost income, missed payments, job losses, and economic devastation.
