Recently, news broke that the Bernie Sanders campaign was paying his employees far less than the $15 an hour that he advocates. Since then, new accusations arose that further challenge Sanders’ sincerity when it comes to the working class.
Those accusations come in a complaint filed by former Sanders campaign staffers with the National Labor Relations Board.
The complaint states that the Sanders campaign, despite presenting themselves as “pro-union” had actually fired at least three campaign workers in retaliation for their attempts to unionize the campaign.
A claim that the Sanders campaign did not directly deny when questioned by reporters, instead opting to point out that they are an at-will employer that can fire employees for any reason.
While the campaign certainly has that right, it is still a hypocritical position from Sanders who rallies against at-will employment. Sanders equates at-will employment to the ability to discriminate against employees, then turns around and uses it to fire people who simply wanted $15 an hour and not to work 60 hour weeks.
Most of the remaining campaign workers did get a “bump” to $15 an hour due to reduced available hours by the campaign (presumably with all other hours deemed contractually voluntary).
Yet when those employees find out that despite Sanders’ rhetoric, they are at-will employees for a hypocrite, they may want to seek alternate employment.
Maybe one of the many employers that Bernie Sanders rallies against. They may not seem as “nice,” but they likely won’t push for the six-day work-week that the Sanders campaign demanded in their union negotiations.
In the coming months, the National Labor Relations Board will investigate the claims made by the terminated employees at which point we will learn more about the Sanders Sweatshop.
