We re-named this segment “Big Brother bill of the week,” because this bill goes far beyond nanny state and into the realm of totalitarianism.
This bill introduced by Rep. Lisa Cutter (D-Jefferson County), wants the government to choose what news and information are correct for your children’s eyes and ears. Liberal educators don’t want to teach kids how to be a discerning audience, and instead, they want to indoctrinate our kids to take in government “approved” news and information, only.
To say this an overreach by the Democrats is an understatement. Liberal indoctrination isn’t anything new, but this type of policy is straight up Orwellian.
The bill forms a committee made of (Note the sarcasm in brackets):
-An academic media expert (whatever that is)
-A representative from a nonprofit specializing in media literacy (Because Nonprofits are never biased…)
-A journalist (nailed it)
-A teacher from a rural area of the state
-A teacher from an urban area of the state
-A Librarian
-A representative from a parent organization (Mom works for the school and heads the PTA)
-A school administrator
– A student
So these are the people who would be deciding what acceptable media is for your children. Can we be sure there will be no bias? Could we trust this committee if the press right now can’t even validate what is and isn’t a reliable source?
Folks, this is big brother telling you what you can and can’t read, and whom you can and can’t trust.
Shouldn’t we be putting more into teaching our kids about civics?
Scenario: You watch Fox News and read the Wallstreet Journal, but the teacher taught your child those are “fake news sources,” and that real news consists of the Washington Post and CNN.
Parents are the education authority for their children – not the state.
Unfortunately, Democrat Lisa Cutter believes the government knows best.
There is good news, however. It appears other legislators aren’t willing to put their fingerprints on this bill as of right now. We should do what we can to keep it that way.
Home school is looking better and better these days.
