Back door attempt to shut down charter schools

House Bill 1190, sponsored by Rep. Cathy Kipp of Larimer County, aims to cut funding to charter schools in Colorado.

The current funding provided to charter schools comes from mill levy overrides and money provided by the legislature to give charter schools equal footing in public education.

Kipp touts on her website she will fight, “…so all students have the opportunity to receive an excellent education…,” but shutting down charter funding contradicts her promise.

The truth is this legislation props up teacher unions and is a backdoor attempt to shut down charter schools in Colorado.

We are curious how Democrats for Education Reform will react to this measure given their history of supporting charter schools.

It is not clear whether Governor Jared Polis, who founded the New America School charters, will sign the legislation if it reaches his desk.

  1. Charter schools offer a much needed invaluable service to unique populations of kids in Colorado. DO NOT remove charter school funding!!!!!
