Democrats are quietly rolling out rent control measures that will further strain the struggling Colorado housing market.
Current law requires three days notice prior to eviction for tenants to cure rent violations.
HB19-1118 seeks to increase that period to 14 days.
Though it may not sound serious, this rent control bill will cause significant harm to landlords and the housing market.
Increased time until eviction will allow tenants to live “rent free” while taking up valuable housing units.
This increased turnaround hurts landlords and tenants down the line. By forcing landlords to sit on housing, they will be forced to raise rent prices.
Furthermore, this reduction in freedom of operation will reduce availability in the housing market.
Between rent control and housing assistance paid for by your tax dollars, Colorado housing will soon become even more unaffordable.
Just one more page ripped out of the California playbook.
